Tours

KARNISCHER RADWEG R3

• Level of difficulty: Easy
• Total elevation change: 205 m
• Distance: 85 km
• Time: approx. 5 hours

The Carnic Bike Trail is a relatively easy tour through the Gail Valley and a perfect tip for anyone looking for a relaxing ride with a gorgeous panorama. The trail passes directly by Tröpolach before heading to Pressegger Lake via Hermagor. If you want to take a break already, the 1st Carinthian Adventure Park at Pressegger Lake offers a wide variety of attractions to choose from. The trail continues past Latschach, Vorderberg, Nötsch and Oberschütt to Villach. The Karnischer Radweg bike trail (R3) is well-marked with green signs and white ground markings. Along the way, any number of inns invite you to enjoy local specialities and home-made products (for example at Marasch, Carinthia’s oldest inn, located in Tressdorf). AUF DEN GUGGENBERG

• Level of difficulty: Medium
• Total elevation change: 650 m
• Distance: 27 km
• Time: approx. 2 hours

This is a varied tour for leisure bikers. The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view of Carinthia’s mountains. Our tip: make a rest stop at Guggenberg to savour the wonderful view over the Gail Valley. If leaving directly from CUBE, follow the R3 bike trail towards Hermagor – the somewhat challenging ascent to Guggenberg starts from the Hermagor post office. The beautiful view stretches over the entire valley. After a short climb on a paved road, you come to a compact gravel road at the beginning of the woods. Follow this road in its slight downhill towards Kreuth/Jenig. From there, the trail winds its way downhill through a number of curves and on partly rougher surfaces. You can download the trail map here.

EGGER ALM – POLUDNIG

• Level of difficulty: Difficult
• Total elevation change: 1,280 m
• Distance: 41 km
• Time: 1.5 – 2 hours

This technically challenging tour requires a good physical condition – the trail up to Egger Alm is locally renowned among bikers. The actual ascent begins in Möderndorf (Gail Bridge), from where the trail rises steadily over 14 bends up to Egger Alm. After a slight downhill past Egger Alm Lake, you will come to a fork in the trail just before Dellacheralm. Follow the paved road to the right. After a short distance, you will come to a gravel road which will take you uphill to a ridge and then, after a short downhill, back, down to Poludnig Alm. A short detour on foot to Poludnig Peak (1,999 m, 45 minutes) is well worth it. You can download the trail map here.

RATTENDORFER ALM – PONTEBBA

• Level of difficulty: Very difficult
• Total elevation change: 2,200 m
• Distance: 59 km
• Time: approx. 5.5 hours

One half of this physically and technically demanding MTB tour is on the Italian side of the border. Your first opportunity for a rest stop is at picturesque Rattendorfer Alm. From there, the tour continues over gravel roads – which are partly in quite a poor state – to a signposted hiking trail (you’ll have to get off and push) that goes uphill to the Italian border. At 1,850 m, this is the highest point of the tour. A narrow trail continues over flat terrain and slightly downhill to the valley of a small stream before you continue along a gravel road to Lanzenpass. From here, a paved road will take you all the way to Pontebba’s main square. The way takes us over the paved mountain road to Nassfeld/Passo Pramollo – once over the pass, it’s downhill all the way to Tröpolach. You can download the trail map here.
